STEM Role Models

Science has always been my way of understanding the world. At UC Berkeley, I’m pursuing Chemical Biology and Molecular & Cell Biology to explore how chemistry and biology intersect to solve real-world problems. I’m currently researching biomaterials in the Schaffer & Kumar Lab, where I develop hydrogels to study neural stem cell behavior. Beyond the lab, I write for the Berkeley Scientific Journal and founded Sci4Teens to inspire the next generation of young scientists through storytelling and mentorship. I plan to become a professor and researcher in Chemistry and/or Mathematics at a UC (and Cal is definitely high top on the list!). Alongside teaching and research, I have also found a deep passion for science communication and journalism, and would like to combine research, teaching, and science journalism to communicate and share the latest advancements in science and technology to the people. Whether I’m in the lab or finding new study spots around the Bay Area, my goal is the same —to make science fun, accessible, and exciting for everyone!

Cal NERDS has been a transformative part of my Berkeley journey. The mentorship, resources, and encouragement from Diana and the entire team have pushed me to grow both as a researcher and as a person. Through the NERDS Summer Research Program, I learned how to think critically, design experiments, and communicate my science with confidence.

What truly makes Cal NERDS different from other programs is its sense of community. It’s not just about research or professional development—it’s about belonging. Diana, Chris, and everyone at Cal NERDS make you feel seen, supported, and valued in every step of your journey. Even after you leave the program, they continue to check in, celebrate your wins, and remind you that you’ll always have a home here.

That feeling of inclusion and lifelong support is something truly special, and it’s what continues to inspire me to pay it forward.
