My name is Hyeon Hwang and I graduated from UC Berkeley with a BA in Applied Mathematics and will be attending graduate school at UC Irvine in the Mathematics, Computational, and Systems Biology program. I conducted work at the intersection of machine learning and neuroscience as an undergraduate researcher at the Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience. I have also worked at the Salk Institute, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and UCSF where I used statistical machine learning tools and neural networks to analyze clinical patient data. I am interested in fields including bioinformatics, machine learning, neuroscience, and precision medicine. Outside of research, I enjoy reading, playing the piano, and taekwondo.

NERDS has supported me financially throughout my undergraduate research career, provided numerous educational opportunities such as coding bootcamps, GRE preparation, and networking events, and gave me a community of peers who shared similar experiences and goals. I would not be where I am today without all the help I received from mentors, professors, and peers. NERDS also helps students mentally and emotionally by providing food during events and scholarships. It is a strong support system that students can turn to whenever they are struggling or feel lost at Berkeley.
