Having gone through the interview process and securing my internship that was turned full-time after lots of rejections, I have gathered some tips and recommendations, and generated a document that highlights a ton of different experiences that interviewers may ask. Prior to the interview process, I was unsure what was going to be asked and often struggled to formulate my ideas in a concise and effective manner that allows me to share my story and passion. So after receiving my full-time position, I have worked with several students in improving their interview skills and shared my resource document that significantly improved their chances of obtaining internships and eventually helped them secure their internship.

Some tips that I recommend in preparing for your next behavioral interview are practice presenting your story out loud, be confident and proud but not arrogant, and do your research on your interviewers and company (if possible) and have questions either for the interviewer or the company (culture, work-life, other professional opportunities, etc.). For the first point, try practicing all the different questions that could be asked (on the sheet), and each time, try to be more concise, clear, and make sure to answer the prompt. Try to practice in all sorts of situations such as online and recorded, in-person, and zoom and try to work on your public speaking skills such as avoid sounding like you are reading off a teleprompter, and incorporate body language and facial expressions. To the second point, it is natural to feel imposter syndrome and not qualified, but try your best to reassure yourself and know that if a company did not think you were qualified, they would not have given the opportunity to interview you. Avoid acting arrogant like you deserve the position, but rather act confident in your abilities and that you are qualified for the position. For the third point, there will be time leftover for you to ask questions so utilize that time to ask about their thoughts and experience on the company, the projects they have been on, recommendations as a potential hire, or any other questions that you may have.

printf(“We love women in STEM!\n”);
Since entering UC Berkeley, I’ve been fortunate to be part of a few communities supporting ✨women in computer science✨!
Check these out - you can also find them on STAR.berkeley.edu:
CS Kickstart - introductory one week-long program for incoming women interested in computer science @ UC Berkeley. It was an overnight stay program with housing and food covered. Incoming students are invited to apply and the deadline is typically in May/June. I got to attend Figma workshops, tour a tech company in SF, and go to an Oakland A’s game!
Association of Women in EE&CS (AWE) - open to all. Fall semesters are always super AWE-some with visits from industry partners (yes free Chipotle and networking!)
Society of Women Engineers (SWE) - open to all. Similar to AWE, SWE has SWEet meetings and events to build community for women in engineering. You can get involved by joining committees that give back through hosting K-12 events. There are also networking events with industry like EWI.
Girls Who Code (GWC) - open to all. Also has great community and industry events. We do a fun little 30-day Leetcode challenge as well.
CS Scholars - apply through the EECS department when you are a freshman. I got to go to industry field trips to Microsoft and Genentech.

All of these organizations have allowed me to meet so many amazing women in CS. The best part is you can join anytime – it’s never too late. Just show up to a general meeting! You can find info on their websites or Instagrams.

Having graduated with an Applied Math Degree from the Math Department and having done tutoring in these specific core classes, specifically first semester and second semester Calculus, I recognized a need for a pre-assessment test to help prospective students. When I entered college, there were minimal resources to get an idea of what Berkeley Math is like and which semester Calculus would best suit me. I decided to take on the initiative of creating pre-assessment tests for prospective students and students who want to do the exam for fun to help ease the transition to college.

Some instructions on how to go about the tests. As mentioned in the pre-assessment tests for both tests, we noted that they are 3 hour exams and in the case that you are unable to solve certain problems, our recommendation is that you try to move onto the next questions. In addition, if you are unable to solve all the questions or finish the exam within the expected time frame, it is completely okay. Feel free to take extra time to work through the exam and finish out any problems you were not able to. Also, check out the solutions if you have any questions on how to approach the questions or check your answers. Lastly, we would like to mention that struggling at Berkeley and not knowing how to approach problems is completely okay and justified!

Being a local from the Bay, foodie, and having friends that were not originally from the Bay, I was always asked the question, where should we go to eat? Another thing is that in the general vicinity of UC Berkeley, there are not a lot of restaurants that are good in terms of taste and affordable. I took the initiative to develop a guide of restaurants/places that I would recommend for people to go eat if given the opportunity as they are places I would personally go back to. These are personal preferences, but in the case that you do consider trying out these places, I hope you enjoy!

Important reminder is to make sure that you eat as it is important to helping your body function! Once in a while, you should reward yourself and splurge on a nice meal so feel free to check out any of these places that intrigue you.

One can say each individual follows a path that is constructed in parts from the decisions they make, and in parts from the universal current of existence (crazy huh!).
